Infant Mortality Rate

Public Health Preparedness Region: Kansas City Metro
Measurement Period: 2018-2022
This indicator shows the rate of infant deaths (prior to one year of age) per 1,000 live births.

Why is this important?

One of the basic indicators of the health of a community or state is infant mortality, the death of an infant before one year of age. Despite annual ups and downs, Kansas has experienced a statistically significant downward trend in annual infant mortality rates. The leading causes of death among infants are birth defects, pre-term delivery, low birth weight, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and maternal complications during pregnancy. The Healthy People 2030 goal is 5.0 infant deaths per 1,000 live births.
