Percent of Births Occurring to Unmarried Women

This indicator shows the percentage of all births to mothers who reported not being married.

Why is this important?

Non-marital births reflect the number of children born to unmarried women and includes both planned and unplanned pregnancies as well as women who were living with a partner at the time of birth. Health concerns exist for the children of unmarried women. Studies have found that infants born to non-married women are at greater risk of being born preterm, having a low birthweight, dying in infancy and living in poverty than babies born to married women. Almost early 4 in 10 births in the Kansas were to unmarried women, according to KDHE.
