Uninsured Adult Population Rate

State: Kansas
Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the estimated percent of persons ages 18-64 who are uninsured

Why is this important?

Health insurance coverage is an important determinant of access to health care and health status. Uninsured children and nonelderly adults are substantially less likely than their insured counterparts to have a usual source of health care or a recent health care visit. The major source of coverage for persons under age 65 is private employer-sponsored group health insurance. Individual and family private health insurance coverage can also be purchased either directly or through the Health Insurance Marketplace or state-based exchanges.

Public programs, such as Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, provide coverage for many low-income children and adults. Changes in insurance coverage for Kansans in the past decade helped narrow coverage gaps among racial and ethnic groups and people at different income levels. However, despite those improvements, many significant disparities remain. Hispanic, Any Race, Kansans were still 3.3 times more likely to be uninsured than non-Hispanic Whites in 2018 (21.7 percent compared to 6.6 percent).
