Prenatal Breastfeeding Class for Parents

Local

A Good Idea

Description

This is a prenatal breastfeeding class designed to educate families in a prenatal class setting about safe and optimal infant feeding. The two hour class is offered at no cost and is available to any person living in Kansas. The curriculum aligns with WIC, High 5 for Mom and Baby, and the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS (KIDS) Network messages and education related to parenting and maternity care practices. Topics that are covered in the class include establishing and maintaining sufficient and safe breast milk supply, breast anatomy and physiology, maternal diet and lifestyle choices and more.

Goal / Mission

To improve the health and well-being of Kansans by working collaboratively to promote, protect and support breastfeeding.

Results / Accomplishments

The curriculum is currently being used in all “Becoming a Mom” sites (>10 as of Jan. 2018) in Kansas. In addition, it is being used in 5 hospitals and 4 health departments in Kansas. Preliminary results of the “Becoming a Mom” program indicate the curriculum is highly effective at increasing breastfeeding initiation and exclusivity rates. Breastfeeding initiation among program participants was 94.0%, which is higher than the state rate of 87.4%. Of the mothers who were still breastfeeding at the time of outcome survey completion, approximately two out three (65.5%) reported exclusively breastfeeding their baby.
