Stepping Up to Algebra

An Effective Practice

Description

"Stepping Up to Algebra" is a four-week summer program aimed at improving middle-school math achievement. The classes are designed to faciliate problem-solving in small groups, and using hands-on approaches to engage students in learning algebraic concepts. The program is part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) initiative launched by the Silicon Valley Educational Foundation. This foundation works to establish public-private parternships between Silicon Valley businesses and Santa Clara County public schools. The partnerships provide business resources and expertise to teachers and students in grades pre-K to 12.

Goal / Mission

The program is designed to teach students the skills and knowledge required to complete Algebra I by the end of the eighth grade.

Results / Accomplishments

Students taking part in the Stepping Up To Algebra (SUTA) summer program of 2008 achieved a 20% performance gain over the four weeks.
