Get Fresh Detroit

A Good Idea

Description

The idea for this promising practice began in a university of Michigan social venture creation class. Students across academic disciplines joined forces to address the limited availability of fresh food in many Detroit neighborhoods.

Get fresh Detroit packages and distributes fresh produce to liquor stores, corner stores, cafes, and food pantries. Vegetable packages are designed to feed 4 people, include recipes, and are WIC-approved. Produce packages retail for under $3 and include themes such as yellow squash stir fry and stew starter.

Goal / Mission

The mission statement of Get Fresh Detroit is to increase access to fresh and healthy foods in Detroit by transforming the retail of fresh and healthy foods into viable and sustainable business opportunities for store owners in Detroit.

Results / Accomplishments

Within two months of operation, Get Fresh Detroit had developed many community partnerships. Produce from Get Fresh Detroit are now retailing in 7 stores throughout Detroit.
