Green Buildings, Local Law 86
A Good Idea
Description
Local Law 86 applies to many New York City capital projects that receive city funding and involve building construction. Local Law 86 requires such projects to be built in accordance with the standards of the Leadership in Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system. Additionally, it requires that such projects, as well as other upgrades, be designed to reduce both energy and potable water.
Goal / Mission
The goal of this legislation is to promote the design of more efficient buildings; thereby, reducing green house gas emissions, reducing energy costs, decreasing the use of potable water, and reducing the amount of stormwater runoff.
Results / Accomplishments
A total of 114 projects have been started under this legislation since 2007. It is estimated that these building projects have reduced greenhouse gas emissions at an average reduction rate of approximately 3000 metric tons per year for the estimated average $2 billion dollars of capital building construction currently covered by the law each year.
