Atlanta Streets Alive

A Good Idea

Description

Inspired by open streets initiatives from around the world, Atlanta Streets Alive is a street fair where city streets are closed to car traffic to allow people to participate in free health and community-oriented events. The fair is held about twice a year on Sunday afternoons. Many organizations become involved in the event, leading instruction in activities such as sports games, dancing, and various forms of physical activity to engage family members of all ages. Atlanta Streets Alive is sponsored by many local businesses and community leaders.

Goal / Mission

Atlanta Streets Alive seeks to shift the current car-centric dynamic and replace it with a proactive community that comes together on a regular basis to participate in active transportation, physical activity, cultural and artistic endeavors, and to enjoy our neighborhoods and communities from a different perspective-from the street.

Results / Accomplishments

Atlanta Streets Alive held two events each in the years 2010 and 2011, with an average of 3,400 participants. Attendance at the first event of 2012 is estimated to exceed 10,000 people.
