National Night Out

A Good Idea

Description

National Night Out (NNO) is an annual event designed to educate communities about crime and drug prevention, generate support for local anti-crime programs, strengthen community and law enforcement relationships, and let criminals know that the community is committed to fighting crime.

The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) organizes the event around a specific date each year, and participating communities hold block parties, cookouts, parades, flashlight walks, and visits from local law enforcement departments. NATW partners with corporate and local sponsors to ensure that all communities who would like to participate are able to regardless of financial constraints.

Goal / Mission

The goal of National Night Out is to strengthen community and law enforcement relationships and educate communities about crime and drug prevention.

Results / Accomplishments

In 2010, more than 15,000 communities and 37 million people participated in National Night Out from all 50 states, United States territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.

NNO also has an ongoing component called Project 365, which helps communities identify and improve a 'problem area' such as a park with gang activity or a graffiti problem in between the annual events.
